The carriers Kitty Hawk, Nimitz, and George Washington, all tied up in San Diego together. And, just to the right, out of shot, is the Midway.

The Nimitz has work crews onboard and is getting an in port rework. We got to ride her home from Pearl Harbor, in the early part of June...

It isn't very often that you see so many carriers in one spot at the same time anymore.

I never saw the picture, but I was told there was a picture taken by the Navy of the unusual occurrence of four carriers in port at Alameda. This was several months after the end of Vietnam. The way I heard the story, the Navy released the picture and then immediately withdrew it because they thought it would like bad to show four carriers sitting idle.

I was disappointed that I never got a copy of that picture.

From Left to Right...

USS Coral Sea
USS Hancock
USS Oriskany
USS Enterprise

And I am going to guess that the pic was taken sometime between June and September, 1974.

Doc, do you know a date for sure?

Manning the rail will be very different with the new uniform. Blues or whites look much better than the khaki blouse, black pants and boy scout cap. The shots of Alameda sure brings back memories. Note the size difference of the Oriskany and Enterrise I was going to attach a ground shot of the two side by side at Alameda, but could not figure out how

Don,

If you'd like, email the photo to me and I'll host it for you and place it here.

Those pictures bring back a flood of memories for me. Specifically, I hated being inport with the Enterprise. Even though none of the ships were officially open for touring, it was not unusual for people to appear on the quarterdeck asking if they could get a tour of the ship. Of course, it fell on the Public Affairs Office to provide a tour guide. So right in the middle of the working day, with the ship in various degrees of overhaul, we would get a call from the quarterdeck that someone was asking for a tour. And the message was loud and clear from the command that we would accomodate.

What I hated about being tied up next to the Enterprise was that she was a magnet for these people. However they were getting on base, they would just stroll down the pier and come aboard. And Enterprise would refuse the request for a tour. So where do you suppose they would go instead.

I know it was some good PR for the ship that we would take care of them, but boy it sure got old.

Look at this pic here. It has 2 Essex class boats, and a Midway. (looks lik the Coral Sea)

But right behind the Coral Sea is an Independence class CVE...

And as for comparison between a 27C and the Big E?

I even had the year right!
