Gene Lewis, 'Doc,' to all of us who post regularly told me of this. All I'm doing is posting it. Doc through his many searches informed me that this Museum is currently modeling a 9' foot long model of Oriskany as she appeared in 1966. I've known about the musuem, since it is not that far from where I live. I was courious to find out why they chose Oriskany out of all the Essex Class Carriers.

The Curator of the Museum, Danny San Romani, told me that the model was aquired from the old Olathe Naval Air Station in 2004. The number 34 was on it, and it went from there. He said the model was used for training purposes. Below is the link for the Museum.

The 3 master model makers are: Ted Nolde, who reconstructed the Island from scratch; Larry Todd, who is reconstructing the hull; and Darren Roberts, who is building the model aircraft. Dick Trupp is the project coordinator and Dave Murray is the museums webmaster. I would check out the newsletter section as well, especially the June/July of 09, Plane Talk. It shows the fabulous work of Ted Nolde, on the Island of Oriskany and some of the great models that Darren has already completed.

This will be a great project to follow

Update:

I just recieved an email from Dave Murray of the Combat Air Museum regarding an update to the USS Oriskany model they are working on. A new page has been added for this display showing images of the work being done on the hull and a history of how they aquired the model to begin with.

Here's the link to the new page:

I also wanted to post a couple of images of the aircraft Darren Roberts is working on for the model. These shots are of his 1/48 scale version. The scale he is using for the airwing is 1/100. You can see photos of those on the main page for the model.

Doc,

I'm sure that everyone will agree that this will be a very spectacular model when it is done.
Darren's planes, and Teds Island certainly reflect that. Dave Murray sent me this update also. It
will be nice to drive down and see when it is done.

Dave Murray has just updated this page again, and has some more pictures of what the original model looks like. It will be interesting to see how it is transformed into the 1966 configuration.
